I want to keep the game/mod realistic as well, and i'm not sure what other weapons are in the race to replace the m4/m16 but I know that the MX-8 is the most advertised and tested in the Army as of right now.
I'm not saying to use unrealistic weapons, but we don't need to be using the same weapons that are featured in INS. Maybe add the AT4 to the Army side, as this is equal to the RPG. Then add mortors maybe to the INS side to compensate for the M203 grenade launcher....

Mx-8 is suppose to replace the m4 from what i read since m16 is already not ideal for urban combat, though other guns like the barret m468 and Bushmaster Masada (made by magpul then sold to bushmaster) are still in the race so I wouldnt say its definate yet. Also silencers are for special forces and not for average soldiers, after 2 clips that silencer will be useless, it will expand form all the heat and not to mention the frequent immediate use. Silencers work best to take as little amount of shots as possible which is impossible for regular infantry men as they arent trained as well nor do they move in small units like the SF. I dont want to make a game in which it plays real but all the guns are tricked out way beyond military regulations ie an ak with a round clip. BF2 and CoD 4 are big no nos.
-P90 (thats the 50 round gun) is used by tank crews incase their tank is disabled. Aside from that nobody else uses them.
-mp5 is a special forces gun
-Scar series as well are special forces
The list goes on. You wont get a mature audience playing your game if you deviate from the actual thing. If you want tricked out guns being used that do not belong in the respective army be prepared to be flamed by the military community. It should be a infantry simulator not a slowed down CS.

Yes I like many of the weapons in COD4 & BF2... I am thinking of adding the MX-8 prototype which is due to replace the M16A2 and is currently being used by select units in the Army/Marines.
Silencers are hard to implement on a source mod, as with a silencer attached you won't hear you gun (will sound like it has a silencer), but to everyone else it sounds like a regular gun shot. We can look into a work around, but at this time it's not plausible.

We cant have every gun have the option of being scoped as the scoped guns are easier to shoot with. Plus i dont think Insurgents have that many scopes lieing around to make it plausible.
